Cleveland 101 – Business, Science and Tech

Cleveland is home to some amazing inventions, technologies and companies.

Alkaline Battery. In 1957, employees invented a long-lasting alkaline battery using a zinc/manganese dioxide chemistry while working for Union Carbide’s Cleveland plant. In 1980, it was rebranded as the Energizer.

Copernicus and Madame Curie. Busts of the famous Polish scientists are in the Polish Cultural Garden.

Garrett Morgan Inventions. A safety hood smoke protection device, 3 position traffic signal and more from this African-American inventor.

GE Nela Park The first Industrial Park in the world.

Hulett machine. The Hulett machine revolutionized iron ore shipment on the Great Lakes.  It was recognized as “Historic Mechanical Landmarks” by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Michelson–Morley experiment.  The Michelson–Morley experiment (which helped the notion of the constancy of the speed of light gain widespread and rapid acceptance and influenced Einstein) was performed in1887 by Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley at what is now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland

Thomas Edison. Born just west of Cleveland, Edison’s GE bought Cleveland’s National Electric Lamp Company.

Tyler Elevator Building. The company had 24 separate buildings, connected together by a series of bridges, which allowed employees to move around the complex without going outside.
